Lazhar Mansouri at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

Group Exhibition: Africa Fashion

Photographs by Lazhar Mansouri are featured in Africa Fashion, a landmark exhibition celebrating the "creativity, ingenuity, and global impact of contemporary African fashions from the mid-twentieth century to the present day."  Featuring over 200 works – from fashion, textiles, adornment, photography, music and film – the exhibition underscores the diversity and dynamism of the fashion industry within the African continent.

The exhibition put Mansouri's studio photography in conversation with other 20th-century portraits by photographers including Hamidou Maiga and Sanlé Sory – highlighting the innovative forms of self-representation born out of the democratization of the medium.

Developed by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and presented in Melbourne in partnership with the NGV, Africa Fashion is the largest exhibition of fashions from this region in an Australian art institution to date. From November 2023 to February 2024, Africa Fashion and Mansouri's photographs traveled to the Portland Art Museum.

Exhibition organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Curated by the V&A’s Christine Checinska, Ph.D., Senior Curator of African and Diaspora Textiles and Fashion, with Project Curator Elisabeth Murray.
