Danny Simmons: Journey of Spirit
WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC presents Danny Simmons: Journey of Spirit, a thought-provoking exhibition of the artist's paintings, the first since his passing in June 2026. At the heart of the exhibition, curated by James Cavello, is Full Circle (2023), Simmons' monumental 11-panel mixed-media painting installation, selected by New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Arts & Design as the basis for a permanent public art installation at the Jamaica Bus Depot, in Queens. Simmons’ grew up in Hollis, Queens, and remembered the Q Bus as a lifeline for transportation throughout the boroughs. The area is deeply connected to the artist’s life and artistic history. For the commission, the original paintings were meticulously translated by hand onto large-scale glass fired panels spanning almost 200 feet across and 12 feet high. This mega-project will be unveiled by MTA Arts & Design in the fall of 2026. The artist, with his project manager, Margarite Almeida, spent over three years working on the project, along with a fabrication team in Germany. Within the gallery exhibition, the eleven panels of Full Circle are surrounded by 22 recent paintings and works on paper from Simmons’ final years. serving as both the exhibition's centerpiece and a guiding presence, reflecting on Simmons' life and artistic evolution.
