Bob Adelman and Andy Warhol are on view in Andy Warhol: Subject and Seriality at the Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College, State University of New York.
The exhibition represented Warhol’s prints, photographs and multiples created between the 1960s and 1980s on loan from the Neuberger’s own collection, as well as four other Hudson Valley museums, various galleries and foundations. The exhibition highlighted the unique quality of repetitious images across Warhol’s diverse media and his iconic approach to his subject matter.
For the Neuberger Museum exhibition, WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC loaned several rare Warhol works of art, including a unique double-portrait silkscreen of Mildred Scheel, a German physician and the wife of Walter Scheel, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1974-79. The unique work on paper was exhibited next to its editioned counterpart, published by Warhol in 1980, to raise funds for the German Cancer Society where Mildred Scheel was the founder. The silkscreen not only offered insight into Warhol’s methodology, but also demonstrated the evolution of his thought in creating editions. Also on loan from Westwood Gallery were four screenprints of flower pots from the 1950s, created by Warhol at the beginning of his career when he was a commercial illustrator.
The loan also included a rare Bob Adelman photograph of Warhol positioned lying on the Factory floor while he surveyed twelve prints of An American Man (1964), a portrait of Watson Powell, Jr, CEO and president of American Republic Insurance Company.
The exhibition was curated by Jacqueline Shilkoff, Curator of New Media and Director of Digital Initiatives, Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York.
