Westwood Gallery NYC Announces Exclusive Representation of Danny Simmons

We are pleased to announce our Exclusive Representation of artist Danny Simmons and his first solo exhibition with the gallery The Long and Short of It, curated by James Cavello, from September 10 - November 12, 2022.

For over four decades, Danny Simmons (b. 1953, NYC) has created paintings, works on paper, and assemblage informed by the spirit imbued in indigenous and African cultures. As the founder of the artistic movement Neo-African Abstract Expressionism, Simmons reclaims traditional African motifs used in modernism through his use of dots, textiles, and tribal markings.

"I think art is a connector... so I'm conscious of that when I'm creating artwork. I see all of this as being tied together. Spirituality is very important because that's the major way we connect with each other, through conversations."
- Danny Simmons

In addition to being an artist, Simmons is also a poet, author, curator, philanthropist, co-creator of Def Poetry Jam, co-founder of Rush Philanthropic, and noted collector of contemporary art and African sculpture.

His artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally and collected by major institutions and private collectors. Selected museum exhibitions include the Houston Museum of African American Culture, Ghana National Museum, Parish Gallery, Washington D.C., Noel Gallery, Charlotte, North Carolina, among others. His artworks are in museum and institutional collections such as the Brooklyn Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, The Smithsonian, US State Department (Suriname), Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and other collections.
