In Spring of 2026, Museum of Modern Art New York will be celebrating icons of Mexican Modernism Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in its first collaborative exhibition with the Metropolitan Opera. Frida and Diego: The Last Dream presents artwork by the pair in conjunction with the Met’s new opera, El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego.
As part of the installation, MoMA will showcase illuminating portraits of the artists by contemporaries including Lola Álvarez Bravo and Leo Matiz.
In 2001, Westwood Gallery NYC presented Leo Matiz: The Third Eye, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Siqueiros — the first posthumous exhibition of photographs by Leo Matiz (1917–1998), who is widely regarded as the most important Colombian photographer of the 20th century. Many of the photographs exhibited in 2001 portray Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in 1945 in and around their home, la casa azul, in Coyoacán, Mexico City.
